‘What do you do for a living?’

‘So what do you do for a living?’ It’s the question which often comes up when we meet new people. ‘I’m an Alexander Technique teacher’. This reply is often met with, ‘what’s that?’ Or, ‘Is it something to do with posture?’ I then valiantly attempt to explain what it is that I do for my day job.

Explaining the Alexander Technique is a similar to explaining bike riding to someone who’s never been on a pushbike. You can talk about balance, brakes, pedals and gears, but until someone gets outside in the fresh air on a bike, they can’t get what bike riding is really about. There’s no substitute for first-hand experience.
