The sun is shining, the grass (and the weeds) are growing and many of us have more time than ever to spend in the garden. This is when we all throw ourselves headlong into sorting out the garden. Before you do, consider the humble spine. Gardening is a workout, which involves a lot of bending and lifting.
It’s a good idea to do some gentle stretches as you would for other kinds of physical activity.
The key thing to consider is bending.
If you look at the two pics, it’s pretty clear which one may well end up with back pain at the end of the day.
Bend using your hips, knees and ankles, not your waist. If that’s not possible, try kneeling on one or both knees.
For those who have young children or grandchildren, watch how they bend. They’re the best teachers you can get.
Most of all enjoy it, but don’t overdo it!
